Planning table used by Tony Rental Works: one standard unit per 50 guests for a 4-hour event; add units for longer events and for alcohol; one wheelchair-accessible unit per 20 (5%) when the event is open to the public (2010 ADA Standards, section 213.2). Legal minimums for permitted gatherings are set by Deschutes County (one toilet per 100 persons) and Oregon OAR 333-039 — confirm with your permit office.

How the planning table works

The Tony Rental Works planning table starts with one standard unit for every 50 guests at a four-hour event. Every additional four hours adds half the base count. Alcohol adds one unit for every five, rounded up. Events open to the public make at least 5 percent of units accessible, minimum one.

Food adds one hand wash station per two units.

Assumptions behind the table: guests use a unit about once every three hours, each use takes three minutes, and a standard unit holds roughly 200 uses before service. The table is a planning guideline from portable sanitation operators, not a law. Legal minimums come from the sources at the bottom of this page and are lower.

Worked examples

Four worked examples show the planning table in use: a 150-guest wedding with a bar needs 4 to 6 units, a 12-person framing crew needs 1 to 2 units, a 400-person festival needs 12 units and 6 hand wash stations, and a 60-guest graduation party needs 2 units.

150-guest wedding, 5 hours, bar, catered

  1. 150 ÷ 50 = 3 units.
  2. 5 hours is inside the first 4-hour block plus one more: add half of 3, rounded up = 2. Running total 5. (Most couples book 4 and add a mid-reception service instead; both work.)
  3. Alcohol: add 1 for every 5 units = 1. Total 6, or 5 with a service visit.
  4. Private event, but older guests: make one unit wheelchair-accessible.
  5. Catered: every unit has a sink if you choose deluxe, so no station needed.

Order placed most often: 4 deluxe units (1 accessible) plus a mid-reception service. Wedding page.

12-person framing crew, 6 months

  1. OSHA Table D-1: 20 or fewer workers = 1 toilet.
  2. We send 1 standard unit on a 28-day cycle with weekly service. Many GCs add a second so service day never leaves the site without a toilet.
  3. Hand wash station at the lunch area.

Construction page.

400-person community festival, 8 hours, food, public

  1. 400 ÷ 50 = 8 units.
  2. 8 hours: add half of 8 = 4. Total 12.
  3. Public: 5% of 12 = 0.6, round up to 1 accessible unit.
  4. Food: 12 ÷ 2 = 6 hand wash stations.
  5. Deschutes County minimum for a permitted gathering: 400 ÷ 100 = 4 toilets. The planning count of 12 is what keeps the line under five minutes.

Festival page.

Backyard graduation party, 60 guests, 4 hours

60 ÷ 50 = 1.2, rounded up to 2 units. One deluxe plus one standard is the usual order, or one deluxe with a mid-party check for a smaller crowd.

Legal minimums are lower than planning counts. Deschutes County requires one toilet per 100 persons at permitted outdoor mass gatherings. Oregon OAR 333-039-0025 requires seven toilets per 800 persons at mass gatherings over 3,000. OSHA Table D-1 requires one toilet for up to 20 workers.

The 2010 ADA Standards require 5 percent of clustered units, minimum one, to be accessible at public events.

Meet the legal minimum to get the permit; order the planning count to keep guests happy. When they differ, order the larger number. Confirm the legal count with your permit office or venue; this page is not legal advice.

Questions people ask us before they book

How many porta potties for 100 guests?

Two standard units for a four-hour event; three if alcohol is served or the event runs eight hours. Add one hand wash station if food is served, and make one unit accessible if the public attends.

How many porta potties for 200 guests?

Four units for four hours, five with alcohol, six for eight hours. One should be wheelchair-accessible at a public event; two hand wash stations when food is served.

How many porta potties for 500 people?

Ten units for four hours, twelve with alcohol, fifteen for a full day. One accessible unit minimum (5 percent rounds to one), five hand wash stations with food. Deschutes County's permit minimum for a gathering this size is five toilets.

How many porta potties per worker on a construction site?

One toilet for up to 20 workers; one seat and one urinal per 40 workers above that; per 50 above 200 workers. One standard unit counts as a seat and a urinal.

Do I need an ADA unit for a backyard party?

No rule requires one for a private party. Order one if a guest uses a wheelchair or walker; the ground-level entry and grab bars help.

How much does adding alcohol change the count?

Add one unit for every five in the base count, rounded up. For a 150-guest party that means one extra unit.
