Winter porta potty rentals in Central Oregon: what freezes, what does not
Bend sees roughly 168 freezing nights a year, La Pine and Sunriver more. Units keep working when three things are handled: antifreeze, access and placement.
Does the toilet freeze?
The holding tank freezes without treatment at Bend's mean January low of 24.6°F, so from November through March we add propylene-glycol antifreeze at delivery and every weekly service, which keeps the contents liquid well below zero. The plastic seat, walls and door are unaffected by cold.
The only parts that freeze first are water lines in deluxe units and hand wash stations.
- Standard units: tank antifreeze only. Trouble-free to below zero.
- Deluxe flushing units: antifreeze in both tanks; the flush slows below the mid-teens until sun hits the unit.
- Hand wash stations: drained or pulled on forecast nights below 15°F.
- Restroom trailers: heated, run through winter with power connected.
Can the service truck reach the unit after a storm?
The loaded service truck weighs about 26,000 pounds and will not climb an unplowed grade. The City of Bend plows arterials first, selected collectors second and residential streets last, so service on Priority 3 streets can shift a day after a big storm. Keep a 10-foot path plowed from the street to the unit and service continues on schedule.
Rural sites: Deschutes County and Crook County plow county roads on their own priorities, and a four-wheel-drive service truck covers Tumalo, Deschutes River Woods and Sunriver. Cascade Lakes Highway and Paulina Lake Road close from late November until about Memorial Day, so trailhead sites are summer only.
Where should a winter unit go?
Put a winter unit where the morning sun hits it, on a packed-snow or gravel base, with the door facing away from the prevailing wind, and within 15 feet of a plowed spot the truck can reach. A unit on soft snow settles and the door binds, so the driver sets a pallet or plywood base at delivery.
Winter events
Oregon WinterFest in February and ski-area parking events use standard units with antifreeze set on packed snow with pallet bases, plus a heated trailer where guests are in street clothes. Winter weddings in Sunriver and Sisters usually book a heated two-station trailer with a generator when venue power is far away.

Questions people ask us before they book
Do you charge extra in winter?
No. Antifreeze and winter service are part of the cycle price.
Can you deliver during a snowstorm?
Whenever the street to the site is plowed. On residential streets after a major storm, delivery may move to the next morning.
Will the hand sanitizer freeze?
Alcohol sanitizer stays liquid at Bend temperatures.
My jobsite is in La Pine at 4,200 feet. Any difference?
La Pine nights run colder than Bend and snowfall is more than double. Antifreeze handles the tank; keep the approach plowed for the Tuesday service truck.
Can a unit sit on the snowbank at the end of my driveway?
Not on a bank. The driver sets a pallet base on packed snow at a level spot; a plowed pad beside the garage is best.
